Paper 4 Section 1

English is the dominating language in the world, as of today currently. There are multiple versions of English such as American English, British English, Australian English, and Canadian English. Even though all these ‘English’s’ speak the same language, they all have different pronunciations and meanings through some different words.

English is being spoken of by more than 1 billion people, and more than half of the world's population, 4 billion, know how to say basic things in English such as saying greeting someone, ‘hi’ and ‘goodbye’. Linguist David Crystal, a theorist of the English language has said that English in the future may not even be the ‘dominating’ language being used around the world. The reason why he explains that in the future the United States may be the global superpower. Future global superpowers could be China, where we may be speaking Chinese, Saudi Arabia, where we may be speaking Arabic, or even other countries.

The provided text clearly states that since English is a ‘lingua Franca, they explain that a Chinese speaker who may not speak any French to whom someone does speak French and who may not speak Chinese, may both try to communicate in English. Due to this being a ‘present status’ or modern-day this might likely change.

Since technology and the world around us are continuously evolving and changing, new things are being made by humans. The text says that in the future humans may no longer need to speak in English. The article states that a South Korean computer scientist, Wonkyum Lee, has developed a ‘translation and voice-recognition system that when you’re calling someone on the phone, they will be speaking in that language and that you wouldn’t know if it is a computer or a real human talking to you.

Nowadays being a multilingual person is being normalized and is continuing to grow. Many foreign people come to many of these English countries such as the USA, UK, Canada and Australia, and they bring their languages here. As they continue to live in the area, they continue to learn English. Multilingual people know more than one language, meaning that speak their native language at home, and English outside their home such as at work or with friends.

David Crystal said that multilingual people are the power to change how the English language changed in the future. He states that multilingual people use accommodations where some people want to sound ‘like them’, such as how they pronounciate words or use syntax and lexis within their community.

The key phrase in the text is that ‘the computers are coming, and they are winning’. This strong phrase gives us a prediction of what the future of language may come out to be. Already Google and many other internet browsers have created translation key factors by how they say it such as pronunciation, the writing of it, and how to read it. This can dramatically change the future. This brings back to David Crystal's theory of that the English language may no longer be the dominant language.

The language of English has been adapted throughout history and English is one of the hardest languages to learn and speak. English was first adopted from a Native tribe in Germany when they arrived in the UK. Extensively ever since the UK took lands of the USA and many other countries, it has grown significantly. There have been many meanings of the English language that have been used in early English, which is now almost don’t exit, and so the opposite happens of modern-day English language words may not have been used correctly or was a word in early English such as the word ‘car’ or ‘airplane’.

  1. Hi,
    AO1: 2 marks
I feel you just had a rudimentary grasp of the text. The reason I think so is because you summarized what the work was about, and while you did include some obvious allusions to a broader area of knowledge, I believe you could have gone a little farther. We spoke a lot about theories and theorists and how many people came up with them, which demonstrates your broad breadth of knowledge and insight. However, I feel you spent much too much time on theories and discussing the text, with no mention of reprimands or ideas.

    AO2: 3 marks
I feel you have a clear statement with a few minor flaws, but you did not obstruct your reader's or audience's communication. I thought it flowed smoothly and had strong arguments that developed clearly. I wish you had spent more time on them and weren't so rushed since your paragraphs are so short that they don't reflect the potential you have. “they all have different pronunciations and meanings through some different words. ” You mention the various pronunciations, pronouns, and other features that different English dialects have, but you don't go into detail.

    AO4: 4 marks
I believe you had an okay understanding of your situation, as well as the concepts and methods employed. References to a broader study of language concerns, concepts, methodologies, and approaches are made clear. However, I didn't offer you a deep grasp because it was extremely brief and short, but you did discuss a number of hypotheses. You utilized a few keywords, but you might have gone farther and included more. “syntax and lexis”. These are instances of buzzwords that are highly frequent, but I don't believe they are well-developed enough to be utilized in this report.

  2. AO1: 3/10 marks
You show a limited understanding of the meaning and context as you mention different languages on an international level but never really connect this with the topic of the issue being raised. You do state context that relates to the present, but not much on the future of the English language. You expand upon specific points and theories such as David Crystal in your second paragraph which is good but, make sure you mention more than just him. Towards the end, you sort of just restate yourself or say a summary of what you explained early. You also don’t necessarily touch on how computer translators will change the ‘world’s favorite’ language except you just say that it will change with not much explanation.
    AO2: ⅗ marks
You have minor errors throughout your writing however, they don’t impede communication. Your content is relevant and I can see your thought process of your ideas but, you just need to expand upon everything more. As well as mention other theories and an explanation of why these theories are connected to the prompt you are writing about.
    AO4: 3/10 marks
As I keep saying you only mentioned David Crystal and should continue to expand upon your wider knowledge. Doing so will allow you to show more understanding of the concepts and linguistic issues that were mentioned.
    Overall 9/25 marks

  3. AO1:You had a limited understanding of the text however, I like how you mentioned different languages. You also had clear references to the specific points.
AO2:You have a few minor errors and your content is relevant. Throughout the text try to analyze deeper into it.
AO4:You had a limited understanding of the linguistic issues. You also had minimal references to a wider study. To earn more points try to mention multiple different issues.

  4. Hello,
I think this blog was pretty good. You had stated a lot of different points in this blog but i think that some of them were contradicting what you were saying. I think that you could have explained these a little bit better in order to make it clearer what your point is. For example when you said “The key phrase in the text is that ‘the computers are coming, and they are winning’.” and then “Already Google and many other internet browsers have created translation key factors by how they say it such as pronunciation, the writing of it, and how to read it.” This explanation could make it sound like you are disagreeing with the text and saying that translation technologies are already here. I think that you had shown a very clear understanding of the text so for Ao1 i would give you 5 marks. I also think that you had a limited expression of your ideas and had content relevant to the topic so for AO2 i would give you 2 marks. I think that you had shown a limited analysis of the text so i would give you 4 marks for AO4. Overall that's 11 marks out of 25. Great job!
