Paper 3 Section B
Raina is five years old which means that she’s in her post telegraphic stage. This means that during this stage children tend to become more demanding. Here Raina demands her mother to go in the direction that she herself wants to go by saying ‘i want to go this way’ and ‘can we go in this field’. During this stage their mostly wanting to do their own ways or things that they want to do.
Another aspect would be when Raina uses the theory of LASS, Language Acquistion Support System. The scenario here would be when the mother is telling Raina to look up in the sky and letting her acknowledge of what a ‘blackbird’ looks like by saying ‘and look (.) theres a black bird’. This can enhance the knowledge of Raina of her remembering what the blackbird looks like by her mother teaching her that. To prove this would be that later on when Raina sees the blackbird she instantly asked her mother to ‘chase it’, meaning that she knows what it is. This is also another example of hypmoyms where children broaden their use of lexis words and become more specific to what they are talking about such as ‘spider’.
During five years of age children are able to concept contrasting concepts. During the transcription Raina is able to differ from ‘little’ to ‘long’. Here she has the capability to differ between what ‘little’ looks like and what ‘long’ looks like. She also says words such as ‘little birdie’ to also prove this point. She can also know the difference of what a ‘spider’ and ‘the blackbird’ looks like.
Another type of language would be one of Michael Halliday’s language functional theories. When Raina and her mother are having a conversation about the ‘little bird’ Raina asks a question her mother saying “he can’t fly can he”. This is Halliday’s theory, heuristic. It is defined by Halliday’s theory that heuristic is when a child is able to learn and explore new things around the environment by asking a curious statement, but mostly it is when children tend to ask a question they’re not sure about. In this example Raina asks a simple question saying ‘can the bird fly or no’, making her be curious and then the mother responds with an answer ‘i think he can’.
In the second line of the transcript the mother replies Raina saying ‘well wait for mummy now’ in a calmful tone and how the mother used a repetitive word ‘mum’ and ‘mummy’. This is an example of caretaker language when adults or older children tend to speak to infants or little children in words that they’ve said repeatedly.
Towards the middle of the transcript Raina uses the phrase ‘mum can we skip this way’ and in the beginning of the transcript she also says the phrase ‘this way’ twice. Here is where Raina used conditional tenses. By saying these phrases she’s is asking her mother questions to ask if she can go that way meaning she is skeptical and is uncertain about her mothers response.
As we go towards the middle and towards the end of the transcript we see that there are multiple lines ‘//’ which are speech overlaps. There are mostly where Raina is speaking. This can be in the use of turn-taking where someone else is talking and they interrupt what you were saying or speak at the same time such when the mother was talking about the birds Raina jumped in and said ‘// oh YES’ and how towards the end when the mother was talking about ‘the blackbird’ Raina also interrupted and said ‘// just creep in to it’. During the age of five it is typical as five year olds to do this.
