The Crucible
In class we have read the fictional play and have seen the movie, "The Crucible." We learned that the play is about people in a town called Salem, who are accused of witchcraft. As we kept reading and finishing the play, people were falsely accused.
When I think of flawed, I think of people who are to be liars, who have excessive pride, selfishness or even jealousy. The least person I believe to be flawed would be Reverend Hale. According to the text, page 114, "By my oath to Heaven, I believe him now, and I pray you call back his wife before we -." He tried to help John Proctor with the case, making himself seem innocent. However, at the end he felt really bad seeing Proctor be hanged for something he didn't do, when everything was made false.
The second person I believe to be most flawed would be Abby Warren. On page 107, "Mary Warren: I never saw no spirits...Danforth: Thought you saw them! Mary Warren: But I did not, Your Honor." She tried to help John Proctor with the accusations of the witch trials because she told him that Elizabeth was accused. However, she did at the end saying, page 118 in the text "Mary Warren, *pointing at Proctor: You're the DevilNs man!"
The third person I believe to be flawed would be Judge Danforth. According to the text, page 129 in the text, "Twelve are already executed...I should hang ten thousand that dared to rise against the law, and an ocean of salt tears could not melt the resolution of the statutes." Danforth doesn't care about the people or even evidence. Quote, page 94 in the text, "a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it." He only believes the innocent, and not those accused.
The fourth person I believe to be flawed would be Mr. Putnam. According to the article, on page 96 in the text, "Danforth: Mr. Putnam, I have here an accusation...He states that you coldly prompted your daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs that is now in jail...This man is killing his neighbors for their land!...The day his daughter cried out on Jacobs, he said she'd given him a fair gift of land." He used his daughter, Ruth, to accuse George Jacobs so that he can take his land. He's very much selfish like Parris, however he he is rich, because he has a lot of land, therefore he wants to become richer.
The fifth person I believe is flawed flawed would be Reverend Parris. According to the article, on page 108 on the PDF, page 105 in the text, "Proctor, at once: Mr. Parris discovered them himself in the dead of night! There's the child she is! Danforth - Mr. Parris -Parris: I can only say, sir, that I never found any of them naked, and this man is -Danforth: But you discovered them dancing in the woods? Eyes on Parris, he points at Abigail. Abigail?Hale: Excellency, when I first arrived from Beverly, Mr. Parris told me that. Danforth: Do you deny it, Mr. Parris? Parris: I do not, sir, but I never saw any of them naked. Danforth: But she have danced? Parris, unwillingly: Aye, sir." In this quote, it reveals that Mr. Parris said he saw girls dancing in the woods, but never saw a naked one. However, John Proctor could've helped John Proctor with the witch trials saying that he said he saw someone naked when he first came in. He's a selfish person because he only thinks about himself and his family. He doesn't want his reputation to be ruined if anyone found out that Abigail was lying.
The sixth person I believe to be flawed would be John Proctor. According to the text, page 23 in the text, it quotes, "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby. Abigail: Aye, but we did." In this quote we noticed that John Proctor was committing adultery of seeing and committing lust to Abigail. If John Proctor never even touched or have seen Abigail, then it would've Proctor would've never been hung and Abigail wouldn't have accused his wife, Elizabeth, of taking part of witch craft.
The most flawed character in the play, "The Crucible," I believe would be Abigail Williams. The reason why I say this is because she is the main reason why I believe the witch trials happened in the first place. She blamed innocent people for herself to no getting blamed for. According to the text, page 52 on the PDF, page 48 in the text, "I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!...I saw Goody Sibber with the Devil!...I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil!...I saw Goody Booth with the Devil!" She accuses people of having sold themselves to the devil and how she thinks accusing other people would make herself seem "invisible" since the people of the town would be focusing more on those that she accused of "being with the devil."
