Gatsby 1

     In class we started reading The Great Gatsby and we know that so far there have been three parties. The first party was in Tom's and Daisy's home. The author describes their home as "a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay. The lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile, jumping over sun-dials and brick walls and burning gardens-finally when it reached the house drifting up the side in bright vines as though from the momentum of its run." (pg. 6, paragraph 3) This was very popular for houses to look like in the 1920s. The "colonial mansion" represents what houses in the south looked like, such as plantation homes. One of the guests would be Miss Baker, who is a friend of Daisy. She is a selfish person who doesn't really pay attention to Nick. "she nodded at me almost imperceptibly, and then quickly tipped her head back again-" (pg. 9, paragraph 2) Miss Baker also likes to "spill the tea." For instance she tells Nick that "Tom's got some woman in New York." (pg. 15, paragraph 3) Tom is also very selfish, quote "'I've got a nice place here' he said, his eyes flashing about restlessly." (pg. 7, paragraph 5) Daisy and Tom haven't seen each other in years. When she first sees him, she doesn't even get up, all she does is "she leaned slightly forward with a conscientious expression...'I'm p-paralyzed with happiness.'" (pg. 8, paragraph 4-5)

     Another party would be Myrtle's party in chapter 2. We know that Myrtle is married to Georgie Wilson, a man who works at a dealership and sells cars. In the book in page 29 paragraph 2, the author describes Myrtle's apartment as "a small living-room, a small dining-room, a small bedroom, and a bath. The living room was crowded to the door with a set of tapestried furniture entirely too large for it..." (The guests in Myrtle's actions and "her laughter, her gestures, her assertions become more violently affected moment by moment, and as she expanded the room grew smaller around her, until she seemed to be revolving on a noisy, creaking pivot through the smoky air." (pg. 30-31, paragraphs 4, 1) One of Myrtle's guests at the party would be Catherine, who is Myrtle's sister. Her actions were somewhat normal. She tells Nick that neither Tom nor Myrtle can see each other with their spouses. "It's really the wife that's been keeping them apart. She's a catholic, and they don't believe in divorce." (pg. 33, paragraph 13) Another guests would be  the McKees. Mr. McKee is a photographer. During Myrtle's party he was somewhat happy. Mrs. McKee is married to Mr. McKee. The author describes her as a "shrill, languid, handsome, and horrible." (pg. 30, paragraph 3) During the party her actions were intriguing. She talks to Nick about how if she hadn't met him-Mr. McKee- then "he'd of got me sure." (pg. 34, paragraph 11) Tom was a whole mess, his actions were dreadful. He somewhat bossed Myrtle by saying quote, "Get some more ice and mineral water, Myrtle, before everybody goes to sleep." (pg. 32, paragraph 2). On page 37, Tom and Myrtle were having a fit, and Tom hit her. "Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand." (pg. 37, paragraph 3)

     The last party would be Gatsby's party in Chapter 3. In this Chapter, Nick Carraway meets Jay Gatsby himself. The author describes the setting, quote "There was dancing now on the canvas in the garden; old men pushing young girls backward in eternal graceless circles, superior couples holding each other tortuously, fashionably..." (pg. 46, paragraph 10) The guests actions in the book are drunk and "men pushing young girls backward." Nick were one of the few people that have been invited by Gatsby himself. On page 41, paragraph 3 it quotes, "I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited-they went there." One of the guests actions in this party would be Jay Gatsby. He seems very friendly and chill. "'Good night.' He smiled-and suddenly there seemed to be a pleasant significance...'Good night, old sport....Good night.'" (pg. 53, paragraph 6) On page 39, paragraph 1, in Gatsby's party the guests are described, quote, "In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars."

     If I had to choose one party I would choose Gatsby's party. The reason why is because the food sounds delicious. I could imagine that."On buffet tables, garnished with glistening hors d'œuvres, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys bewitched to a dark gold." (pg. 40, paragraph 2) The other ones didn't even have 5 star foods, they just had drinks. Plus, his house is big, has a singer, and everything, when the others were just small, and they all talked about boring stuff like marriages and all they did was drink. They didn't have any music.

Kashmir

     In the first paragraph, as the writer writes their introduction, they pictorially describe how the setting of Kashmir looks like. Such as describing how the scenery of the sky is a "milk blue sky" and the ground as a "yellow mustard field". In the first paragraph, the writer is describing the scenery of Kashmir, the region in India from a distance, not the writer themselves actually being there from far away. However, in the second paragraph, the writer is at a specific town in Kashmir, At Qazigund, where they are describing the place first hand.  The writer in the second paragraph describes At Qazigund as a “charcoal, tobacco, cooking oil, months-old dirt, and human feces”. Since the writer in the first paragraph was seeing it from far away, it looked nice a peaceful, but when they were there, the writer is describing it as very crowded, dirty, disgusting, and very old. Paper 1 Question 1 b Review

     The writers' purpose, Richard Branson, is to inform and educate the reader(s) on why being ‘happy’ is a great deal of success and what it can bring to the reader, and what it has accomplished for the writer himself.      The purpose is somewhat stated in the first paragraph as the writer begins with an introduction of how he wants ‘to help you’. Branson first describes how the reader is going through a ‘tough time’. By doing so this can rather engage the reader by furthermore questioning how Branson is going ‘to help’ and yet by also indicating how the writer mentions ‘you’, the reader, of being in a terrible tribulation. This can bring up imagery due to the fact that even though the reader(s) may not likely be in ‘a tough time’ they can imagine themselves throughout reading the letter.      Throughout the text, the writer changes shifts in using perspectives.
